Stand in the Light: How to Have Hope

Hope is the belief that something good will happen in the future. You accept that challenges are part of life, but you can persevere and have a positive outcome. Having hope builds optimism. We all fall somewhere on the spectrum between optimism and pessimism. Very few people are full on optimistic, the glass is half full, every minute of the day. On the other hand, if every day is a bad day, there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Bringing hope, optimism, and resiliency to our every day lives is great self-care.  As the world faces uncertainty during a pandemic, political transition, and civil rights issues – you have control over what you feed your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Put in the effort to add more joy and stability to your life through the cultivation of hope.

So, how do you build hope in your everyday life? Here are some tips and strategies:

  1. Name the challenge in your life.
  2. Identify the negative belief you have about the challenge.
  3. Examine the consequences of your negative beliefs.
  4. Dispute the beliefs counterproductive to your happiness.
  5. Replace the negative perception with a new line of thinking that builds a new positive habit in your everyday life.
