In the United States, October 31 is Halloween. In other parts of the world, November 2 is All Soul’s Day. We recognize the cycle of birth and death. We say good-bye to the departed. We release. Through writing, you can say good-bye and release that which no longer serves you.

Recognize the need to let go. After a certain point in life, many of us never say out loud that we are tired. We are used to children expressing difficult feelings after having a nightmare, seeing a big spider, or watching a scary movie. Adults typically ignore it, bury it, or run from it. Accept that we do the best we can do to ride the ups and downs of life. However, eventually we just need to drop old baggage.

Learn from the past, do not repeat it. Take the lessons of the past and drop the negative emotion behind it. Release yourself from the weight. The challenges you had at 12, 21, 35 and above should not be the same. You are not required to hold on to it, revisiting, rethinking, rehashing it all!

Excess emotional baggage blocks opportunity. Feeling weighed down is not a fun experience. The only thing that never changes in life is that—nothing stays the same. With the dawn of each new day, you can begin again. Wipe the slate clean. Set new plans. Try again.

Journaling is a great way to release that which no longer serves us. Writing is limitless. There is no required word count for journaling. Writing has no judgement. Your journal is for your eyes only. Spouses, family, and friends do not need to read your journal. Writing can take any form. You can make up random words to suit your emotions. If you want to do an abstract doodle, that’s fine too. Maybe you feel inspired to rhyme and write in song. When you journal, you are in charge.

As October ends, say good-bye to old ties, old baggage, and old ways of thinking through writing.
